Shadowbahn by Steve Erickson7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In a brilliant set piece in the middle of the book, we are privy to a conversation taking place between John F. To give you a taste of the central character Zan’s politics, here he is reflecting on the responsibility of parenthood (another important theme): “he held a laissez-faire philosophy on certain things, that he felt it was up to his son and daughter to find their own way on smaller matters such as the existence of Satan or Republicans.” Erickson doesn’t shy away from politics, though. It’s inaccurate to say his new book is a political novel, if only because that label sticks to just one side of what’s a multifaceted work of art. If Hilary Clinton had won in November Shadowbahn still would be a profound precautionary tale, but Donald Trump’s election lends it a portentousness Erickson himself couldn’t entirely have seen coming. ![]() ![]() This is an extremely timely novel, as much by unfortunate accident as by design. A persistent theme in Steve Erickson’s new novel Shadowbahn is the accidental nature of epoch-defining moments. ![]()

The scholomance series7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() It can be incredibly deadly and not all of the students will make it out alive. I was especially interested in learning about the Scholomance itself. I thought that this was an excellent way to kick off the series! I really enjoyed getting to know El and the rest of the characters. ![]() Genres: Fiction / Fantasy, Fiction / Fantasy / Epic Published by Penguin Random House on September 29, 2020 Anisha Dadia does a fantastic job with the narration and I found myself reaching for my headphones every chance I could. I really enjoyed getting to know El, Orion, and the rest of the group at the Scholomance. Last month, I listened to all 3 books in this trilogy and had a fantastic time with them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hope you’re all okay with that but it’s time to write my next novel. So, starting with this post, you’ll be hearing from me, not weekly, but every other week. And finally, now that my ninth novel, A New Season, is essentially finished and formatted-and soon heading to the printers-(update coming in my next post), I really must turn my focus to my tenth novel (update coming on that at some point, too). Secondly, to be honest, it’s hard to come up with brand new content week in and week out. (I remember the pressure-and ultimate futility-of keeping up when I once had a New Yorker subscription.) It’s a lot to expect that you’ll read each one. Why? Well, firstly, I’ve worried that I may be testing your patience and your time by dropping a post in your inbox every week. But as we start our second year together, I’ve decided, for a few reasons, to revert to my original plan of posting bi-weekly. So in the last year, I’ve written and published here, just shy of 60 posts. But in an effort to get out of the gate quickly and create enough content to attract subscribers, I ended up posting every week-even more often in the very early days. ![]() I started off suggesting that I’d post every two weeks. I’m grateful for all the support you’ve shown me through your subscriptions and your kind comments. By the time this post hits your inbox, I will have been on Substack for a year. ![]() ![]() He tells her to make up her mind and when she does she'll find him.until she gets hit by a car, loses her baby(apparently she was pregnant) and doesn't remember the last few months. Since i haven't read one review mentioning this, let me tell you the premise of the story is in fact a FREAKING LOVE TRIANGLE. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kyla Pratt will say something and the reaction from Gavin Houston, it just made no sense. In here it was a little much. This movie is weighed down with a lot of lengthy monologues and at times it seems as if the characters are just talking at one another. His characters seem to all be the same with no real depth, he plays them all the same. Gavin Houston, he is always gonna be Jeffery from the haves and have-nots to me. It was like every scene was a sound check. But then Kyla Pratt starts speaking like she's drunk. In the first half of the movie, she sounds drunk as she tries to adopt a sophisticated way of speaking? Idk. Kellita Smith's acting was everywhere and after her character's personality changed in the middle of the movie, I'm not too sure the bad acting was her fault. Also, Kyla as much as I love her did not research the role and did it showed and came off horrible. That fake suicide attempt when she was in the bath tube trying to drown herself? Like really? Mentally disturbed people are not that mentally disturbed. Bad everything, bad storyline, bad acting which I am shocked with who was in this. ![]() ![]() ![]() I haven't read the book but if the book is anything like this movie, this straight, it was bad. This was not a good nor accurate portrayal of the struggles one goes through. I am upset and slightly insulted as an African American living with a Mental Disorder. ![]() ![]() ![]() And even though a case of mistaken identity can be quickly set to rights, matters of the heart are quite different. But when an unexpected run-in at his twin brother’s estate with a ravishing, raven-haired maid leads her to believe he’s actually a viscount, Cade’s renegade life is thrown wildly off-kilter. Nothing and no one can hold him to be the duty-bound, honorable man he is expected to be. A rumored pirate and the scurrilous black sheep of his well-to- do family, Cade Cavendish relishes his world of rebellion, deception, and seduction. ![]() The rules of engagement were never so scandalous. Some of the passengers are less than sympathetic for the poor, sick child and it looks likely that the miserable, Sunday-hating driver will put them off the bus. After so long shut away from the world some sunlight would probably do them all the world of good, but the surviving twin, Carrie, is unwell and starts to throw up in the bus. The three surviving Dollanganger children, freshly escaped from the confines of their grandmother’s attic, are on a bus and headed for sunny Florida. Petals on the Wind picks up the story exactly where Flowers in the Attic left it and once again the story is written in the first person and told from Cathy’s viewpoint. I also get the impression that the next book in the series, If There Be Thorns, is quite a dark story. ![]() I only reviewed it for this site because it is a continuation of the story started in Virginia Andrew’s first novel, Flowers in the Attic. Although I have seen Petals on the Wind categorized as being a ‘gothic horror’, I don’t really consider the book to be a horror novel at all. ![]() Alexander roob alchemy and mysticism7/6/2023 ![]() From early Christian mystics to the illustrations of William Blake and the Romantics, this collection spans science, philosophy, and otherworldly mystery over the ages.
